wood choice

Oak - Quercus Robur L

With an oak floor from Wiking Gulve, you get a sustainable floor with all the natural properties of a solid wood floor in an engineered solution. Our oak has rounded edges, which highlight the width of the individual planks and the exclusive look of the floor. Oak is strong and durable, which is why oak has long been used for floor production. The planks are constructed in 3 layers with cross-laminated pine core. This construction makes the planks suitable for underfloor heating and reduces the wood's natural movements by up to 70% compared to traditional solid
plank floors.

Oak is one of the most used and valued wood types for floors – and for good reason. In addition to its classic and timeless appearance, oak is known for its high wear resistance and hardness. On the Brinell scale, which measures the wood's resistance to pressure, oak typically scores
around 3.5 - 3.7. This places oak as a hard wood type, suitable for both private homes and businesses where durability is required.

Maintenance

Oak is known for its high wear resistance and hardness. Suitable for both private homes and businesses where durability is required. Its solid hardness means that oak floors are resistant to daily wear and tear, pressure marks from furniture, and scratches from shoes.
Oak is therefore well-suited for high-traffic areas such as entrances, living rooms, and kitchens.

Depending on the surface treatment you have, there are differences in ongoing maintenance.

We recommend that our care and maintenance guides be thoroughly reviewed before your floor is put into use.

Oak floor with natural warmth and depth

Oak has a characteristic play of colours, ranging from light golden tones to deeper brownish and slightly reddish-brown hues. This natural variation is one of the reasons why oak floors feel both vibrant and timeless at the same time.

The wood's structure is distinct yet balanced, providing a harmonious expression that fits into both minimalist and classic interiors.

The gradings vary from calm, uniform surfaces to more lively expressions with visible knots and natural variations.

Nature and technical properties of the material

Oak is classified as hardwood and is known for its high durability and long lifespan. This makes oak floors suitable for both private homes and commercial environments with daily wear and tear.

The wood is naturally rich in tannic acid, which is part of its character, but also something to be aware of when using it. Contact with moisture or certain metals can in some cases cause dark reactions on the surface.

Therefore, it is always recommended to react quickly to spills and ensure proper surface treatment. The surface can either be oiled or lacquered – where oil enhances the wood's depth and structure, and lacquer provides a protective layer for the wood.

3-layer construction – stability in natural wood

All Wiking Gulve oak floors are constructed as 3-layer plank floors, where the wood's natural movements are controlled through a technically stable construction.

The middle layer is laid across the grain, which reduces the wood's movement by up to 70% compared to solid floors.

This construction makes oak floors particularly suitable for underfloor heating and rooms with fluctuating temperature and humidity.

The wear layer consists of carefully selected, high-quality oak with a thickness of 4 mm, which allows for repeated sanding and thus a significantly extended lifespan.

The result is a floor that combines technical stability with an aesthetic expression that only becomes more beautiful with time.

Oak in modern and classic rooms

Oak flooring is widely used in both new architectural builds and classic renovations, precisely because the material is so versatile.

It serves as a neutral yet characterful base that can support both warm, dark, and light interior contrasts.

The gradings in the Oak series – including 3-strip, Atlantic, Country, Fenris, Freja, Living, Mammut, Natural, Pacific, and Select – allow for working with everything from a very calm and uniform look to a more lively and organic expression.

This makes oak one of the most flexible material choices in the entire collection.

A material that respects nature and craftsmanship

At Wiking Gulve, we work with a deep respect for the material and its origin. Oak is selected in collaboration with experienced foresters from responsibly managed forests in Denmark, the Nordic countries, and Northern Europe.

Production is based on a balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, where quality and resource awareness go hand in hand.

We work with certifications such as FSC®, PEFC, and Cradle to Cradle Certified® as part of a documented approach to responsible production.
