Choice of wood type
Ash - Fraxinus Excelsior
Ash is a light and elegant wood type with a beautiful, smooth structure and fine grain patterns, which give a room a light and modern expression. The wood is known for its high strength and hardness, making it particularly suitable for floors that need to withstand daily use for many years.
The light colour and natural variations of ash wood fit perfectly into both Nordic and minimalist interior designs, where a clean and harmonious look is desired. With ash, you get a floor that combines functionality with aesthetics – and which only becomes more beautiful with time.

Maintenance
Ash flooring is one of the most durable types of flooring available on the market due to its long wood fibers and incredibly hard-wearing surface.
Ash wood is classified as hardwood. Its durability is therefore good, but the surface requires maintenance to protect the wood.
If the floor is supplied with oil, it is important that the surface is thoroughly saturated after laying, so that the floor is dirt-repellent
and easy to clean. Depending on the surface treatment you have, there are differences in ongoing maintenance.

Ash wood flooring with natural strength and character
Ash is known for its light tone and striking grain patterns. The wood can appear calm and minimalist, or more vibrant depending on sorting and treatment.
The colour variations naturally range from bright Nordic shades to warm, slightly brownish or reddish undertones, giving each floor its own visual depth.
The number of knots depends on the sorting. Some expressions are almost uniform and architectural, while others have a more organic and natural appearance.
The material's structure and technical strength
Ash is classified as hardwood and has natural wear resistance, making it suitable for both private homes and high-traffic commercial environments.
Compared to softer wood types, ash is less susceptible to pressure marks, making it an obvious choice for rooms with daily activity.
Surface treatment plays a central role in the floor's appearance and function. An oiled ash wood floor highlights the wood's natural structure, and a lacquered surface adds protection to the wood.

Ash wood flooring
3-layer construction – stability in architectural quality
All Wiking Gulve ash plank floors are constructed as a 3-layer structure, where the wood's natural movements are controlled and stabilised. The middle layer is turned across the grain, which reduces the wood's natural movements by up to 70% compared to solid floors.
This construction makes the floor particularly suitable for underfloor heating and for rooms with changing temperature and humidity conditions, such as modern homes and summer houses. The wear layer consists of selected high-quality ash wood with a thickness of 4 mm, which allows for multiple sandings and thus a significantly extended lifespan.
The result is a floor that combines visual authenticity with technical precision.

Ash hardwood flooring has a brownish or reddish hue, and the grain of the wood provides both a unique appearance and a strength that only comes from Danish ash trees.
Select, Country, Atlantic, Freja and Fenris.
White oil, Frost Matt Varnish.
The wear layer is 4 mm as standard. Should it be necessary to refresh the floor with a sanding, you should expect the wear layer to be reduced by 0.5 – 0.7 mm with a regular sanding, due to the refreshing of the floor. If there are marks, stains, a desire to change the surface or other reasons for sanding, it may require a deeper sanding which further reduces the wear layer.
- Ash Select: has few knots and no brown heartwood. The wood is light and uniform, supporting an exclusive and personal interior design.
- Ash Country: has a vibrant play of colours from the heartwood. The planks can vary in colour from light wood to darker brown heartwood. Country Life has a vibrant play of colours, beautiful knots and fillings.
- Ash Prestige Atlantic: has a varying and lively pattern in the wood. Knots, brown heartwood, and fillings occur in this grading. There can be significant differences in the appearance of the planks, offering a unique opportunity in this grading to mix planks from different packs and create your very own style.
- Ash Freja Mammut: is the grading with a subdued expression in colours and structures. This grading features minor repairs, plugs, and beautiful knot patterns. The Mammut series is Wiking Gulve's exclusive series of extra wide and long planks.
- Ash Fenris Mammut: is the beautiful and lively grading. It features prominent grain patterns, nature's play of colours and knots, as well as repairs and plugs. The Mammut series is Wiking Gulve's exclusive series of extra wide and long planks.
Ash is a hardwood. The wood is therefore not as prone to marks as other types of wood. Should an accident occur anyway, most pressure marks can be lifted by applying water if the surface is not varnished.
Ash wood has a unique glow and colour play that is not seen in many other types of wood. The wood can appear both very stylish and uniform, but also with a lively play of colours and knots.
If the floor is delivered oiled, it is important that the surface is well saturated from the start so that the floor is dirt-repellent and easy to clean.
Highly variable depending on the sorting in question. The sortings that contain more life and brown core will have more knots and fillings.
Ash is known for its high wear resistance and is one of the hardest light-coloured wood species used for flooring. On the Brinell scale, which measures the hardness of wood, ash typically scores around 3.6 - 3.8 – making it harder than both oak and pine. Its high hardness makes ash flooring extremely resistant to pressure marks, scratches, and daily wear and tear. The surface requires maintenance to protect the wood.
Ash is therefore an excellent choice for flooring in homes with high traffic, families with children, or rooms where furniture is often moved around. The wood's light colour and prominent grain provide a modern look and also conceal minor scuffs and dust better than dark floors.
Ash flooring supplied by Wiking Gulve, which has been pre-treated with white oil, must be saturated after installation.
Oil saturation:
Immediately after installation, the floor must be saturated with oil. Use Trip Trap Oil Care White and follow the instructions on the container. The floor must be treated once, after which you can move into your new Wiking floor as soon as the oil has cured according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Lacquer:
The lacquered surface is ready for use after installation.
Depending on the type of surface treatment you have, there are of course also differences in ongoing maintenance.
Oiled floor:
We recommend that you maintain your oiled floor annually with Trip Trap Oil Care White. If the floor is installed in a high-traffic area, such as a hallway or kitchen, you should expect it to need care more often than if the floor is in a room. Regular floor washing can usually be done with clean lukewarm water or possibly Trip Trap Natural Soap White. You can advantageously wash the floor with Trip Trap Oil Soap every 4-5 floor washes to postpone the next oil treatment a little, as you thereby add a little oil to the surface. However, you should not use oil soap with every floor wash, as the wood can become oversaturated and get a greasy oil layer, which will bind dust and dirt to the surface.
Lacquered floor:
Lacquered floors, like all other surfaces, require ongoing maintenance. It is recommended to place felt pads under chairs to minimize surface scratches. If the floor gets a scratch, it can be advantageous to treat it with Trip Trap Lacquer Care. The lacquer care does not remove the scratch but minimizes its appearance. If there is a break in the lacquer, it is very important that the damage is repaired as soon as possible so that the lacquer is sealed and liquid cannot penetrate the wood.
For floor washing, it is recommended to use Trip Trap Vinyl, Laminate, and Lacquer Soap. Follow the dosage instructions from the manufacturer.
Ash in Architectural Spaces
Ash hardwood flooring is often used in projects where light, spaciousness, and material contrast are key elements.
It works particularly well in modern interiors, where the light wood creates balance against dark materials such as stone, steel, or black-stained wood.
The gradings in the Ash series – including Country Life, Atlantic, Mammut, and Select – allow for working with different expressions, from the strict and uniform to the more natural and vibrant.
This makes ash a flexible choice in both private homes and larger commercial projects, where material selection plays a crucial role in the architectural whole.
