Pine - Pinus Sylvestris
Our pine floors are made from European timber, primarily sourced from northern Sweden, where the trees grow slower and thus achieve greater hardness.
To produce planks of the finest quality, we select each tree based on specific quality criteria for straightness, growth rings, and knots. Therefore, we aim to give the selected trees as long a life as possible by utilizing the timber to its fullest.
A wooden floor is a piece of nature – a living material with its own story.

Facts about pine floors
A Wiking pine plank floor is warm and comfortable to walk on, and has a natural play of knots and rounded edges that highlight the width of the beautiful planks. Pine is a classic and popular wood type for floors in Scandinavian homes, especially due to its bright appearance and natural warmth.
When it comes to hardness, pine is among the softer wood types.
A wooden floor is a piece of nature – a living material with its own story.
Knots are the parts of branches that penetrate deep into the trunk, telling the tree's history and vitality. We want to preserve the natural expression and protect the raw timber. Knots are an important part of this story. Therefore, we carefully repair or replace knots during our quality control to enhance the plank's quality and ensure respectful utilization of the felled tree. New knots are meticulously secured with knot glue. We fill with hot melt adhesive in cases where the knot does not require replacement or for similar surface imperfections. We assess the number of knots and their sizes individually as the planks pass through our hands.
The wear layer is typically 4 – 9 mm depending on plank thickness. If the floor needs to be refreshed with a sanding, you should expect the wear layer to be reduced by 0.5 – 0.7 mm.
If there are clear signs of wear, stains, a desire to change the surface, or other reasons, it may require a slightly deeper sanding, which will further reduce the wear layer.
- The Prima grading has a beautiful and natural knot pattern and a few small fillings. Prima is the classic choice.
- The Living grading is a broader and more lively grading and may appear richer in resin content. In this grading, knots will be larger, and there will be more repairs and fillings compared to the Prima grading.
- Nordlys: this grading features a brushed surface where the soft parts of the wood have been removed to increase durability. This results in a robust, structured surface that feels and looks exclusive – ideal for both private homes and businesses.

Regarding hardness, pine is categorized as a softwood floor.
Pine is categorized as a softwood floor, and is more susceptible to signs of wear. However, these marks are easy to rectify with maintenance, and often most soft marks can disappear with just a floor wash or oil refreshment.
On the Brinell scale, which measures the wood's resistance to pressure and wear, pine typically ranges from 1.6–1.8 – depending on the growing site and the density of the wood. This means that pine is more susceptible to pressure marks, scratches, and other signs of wear than harder wood species like oak or ash. Although pine is a soft wood, many choose it for its natural charm and ability to develop a beautiful patina over time. With the right treatment, the lifespan of the floor can be extended, and it can be given a surface that is more resistant to everyday use.
Pine delivered from Wiking Gulve, which has been pre-treated with lye & white oil, must be saturated after installation. The oil we use is an open-pored oil, which means that as a customer you have 2 options regarding after-treatment and appearance.
Oil saturation: Immediately after installation, the floor must be saturated with oil. Use Trip Trap Oil Care White or Natural and follow the instructions on the container. The floor must be treated once, after which you can move into your new Wiking floor as soon as the oil has cured according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Soap saturation: Immediately after installation, the floor must be saturated with white pigmented soap.
Use Trip Trap Natural Soap White in a mixing ratio of 1:10. The floor must be washed 3 times over 2 days. This way the wood has time to dry between treatments. After the third treatment and the floor is dry, you can move into your new Wiking floor.
Depending on the surface treatment you have chosen, there will, of course, also be differences in ongoing maintenance.
Oiled floor: We recommend that you maintain your oiled floor with Trip Trap Oil Care White once a year. If the floor is installed in a high-traffic area, such as a hallway or kitchen, you should expect it to need more frequent care than if the floor is in a room.
Regular floor cleaning can usually be done with clean lukewarm water or possibly Trip Trap Natural Soap White. You can benefit from washing the floor with Trip Trap Oil Soap every 4-5 washes to postpone the next oil treatment a little, as you thereby add a small amount of oil to the surface. However, you should not use oil soap with every floor wash, as the wood can become oversaturated and develop a greasy oil layer, which will bind dust and dirt to the surface.
Soaped floor: To ensure continuous good saturation of the floor, we recommend that you wash the floor with Trip Trap Natural Soap White more often than if the wood were oil-saturated. Always follow the instructions on the container regarding mixing ratios. If you think your floor is well-saturated but needs cleaning, you can advantageously omit the soap and only use lukewarm water.
If you wish to lighten the surface, you can benefit from washing floors with Trip Trap Natural Soap Extra White, as this contains more white pigment and will gradually lighten the surface. If you wish to tone down the light color, you can use Trip Trap Natural Soap Natural or completely omit the soap in the wash water if the surface is already well-saturated. Changing the color of the surface occurs over time after repeated use of the soap.
