Choice of wood
Pitch Pine – Pinus rigida
Pitch Pine is a beautiful and characterful wood with a warm golden glow and distinctive grain patterns. The trees grow to approximately 40 meters in height and almost 1 meter in diameter, making it possible to produce wide and long plank floors from their trunks. Pitch Pine originates from North America and is known for its high resin content, which gives the wood natural resistance to moisture and wear. This makes Pitch Pine ideal for both modern and classic interiors where a floor with personality and depth is desired. With its robust structure and vibrant play in the wood, you get a floor that is both durable and aesthetically unique.

Maintenance
Pitch Pine is a fast-growing conifer species and is therefore classified as a softwood floor. This means that fine cracks may already be present upon delivery, which places extra demands on indoor relative humidity and ongoing care and maintenance.
We recommend that the floor be oiled immediately after laying and before it is put into use. In addition, it is recommended to re-oil twice a year. Every 3rd - 4th floor wash, an oil soap can be used with advantage.
Due to the natural grain patterns and the rapid growth of the raw material, wood floors of this type are particularly susceptible to cracking
as a result of indoor climate conditions. This means that even with strict adherence to the above recommendations, a certain degree
of cracking is to be expected.
We recommend that our care and maintenance guides be studied carefully before your floor is put into use.

Pitch Pine wooden floor with depth, warmth, and natural elegance
The first thing many people notice about a Pitch Pine floor is the wood's distinctive play of colours. The warm golden hues combined with the characteristic grain create a lively yet harmonious look. While many other wood types derive their character from knots, Pitch Pine's visual identity comes more from its prominent grain patterns and the wood's natural variations.
The wood therefore appears almost knot-free, giving a clean and exclusive overall impression. Pitch Pine shares certain visual characteristics with Douglas fir, particularly in the wood's purity and structure, but at the same time has its own unique expression and a deeper character in its grain patterns.
Wide planks with architectural impact
Pitch Pine is particularly well-suited for larger rooms and open-plan layouts, where the length and width of the planks have space to unfold.
The long lines create a natural coherence in the architecture and support the feeling of spaciousness.
The collection includes both Pitch Pine and Pitch Pine Mammut, with the Mammut series representing Wiking Gulve's exclusive selection of extra-wide and long planks.
Here, the wood's structure and grain receive optimal conditions to create a distinctive and exclusive expression.

Pitch Pine
A living natural material
Pitch Pine belongs to the conifer family and is classified as a softwood.
This means that the floor has a pleasant warmth and comfort, but also that the material reacts naturally to its surroundings.
Due to the wood's structure and growth pattern, hairline cracks may appear on the surface. These variations are a natural part of the wood's character and may develop over time as a result of the indoor climate's influence.
Even with proper maintenance, a certain degree of cracking is to be expected, and precisely this lively development is part of what makes Pitch Pine an authentic natural material.
Like other softwoods, pressure marks can also occur with daily use. These can often be reduced or disappear through correct maintenance and ongoing care.

Pitch Pine wooden flooring has a beautiful light colour and very few knots. Naturally, the greatest variation in the planks comes from the beautiful grain patterns.
Pitch Pine and Pitch Pine Mammoth.
- Untreated
- Lye/White Oil
The wear layer is 4 mm as standard. Should the floor need to be refreshed by sanding, you can expect the wear layer to be reduced by 0.5 – 0.7 mm with a standard sanding, due to the refreshing of the floor. If there are marks, stains, a desire to change the surface, or other reasons for sanding, it may require a deeper sanding, which will further reduce the wear layer.
- Pitch Pine: The planks are almost knot-free and have beautiful, distinct grain patterns that can vary in color from light to darker.
- Pitch Pine Mammoth: The Mammoth series is Wiking Gulve's exclusive series of extra-wide and long planks.
Pitch Pine is part of the conifer family. It is a softer type of wood that creates a calm pattern and is particularly well-suited for rooms with large floor areas, among other things.
Hairline cracks (up to 0.5 mm in width) may occur in this type of wood upon delivery.
Due to the annual rings, this type of wood is also exposed to future crack development if you are not extra careful to saturate the surface with oil or soap after installation and before use, as well as the subsequent care and maintenance. During particularly dry periods (when the humidity is low), it is recommended to pay extra attention to adding moisture to the room to slow down crack development.
Pitch Pine is a type of wood that appears almost entirely knot-free.
Pitch Pine wooden flooring is unique. However, similar grain patterns and purity in the wood are seen in Douglas Fir.
Pitch Pine is a soft wood, so pressure marks may occur with use. However, these marks are easy to rectify during maintenance, and often most soft marks can disappear with just a floor wash or re-oiling.
Pitch Pine wood flooring supplied by Wiking Gulve, which has been pre-treated with clear lye and white oil, must be saturated with oil after installation.
Oil Saturation:
Immediately after installation, the floor must be saturated with oil. Use Trip Trap Oil Care White or Natural and follow the instructions on the container. The floor must be treated once, after which you can move into your new Wiking floor as soon as the oil has cured according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Afterwards, re-oiling is recommended twice a year (with Trip Trap Surface Oil Care White), and an oil-based soap (Trip Trap Oil Soap) can advantageously be used every 3-4th floor wash. Precisely because of the grain patterns and the rapid growth of the raw material, wood floors of this type are significantly more exposed to cracking caused by the indoor climate. This also means that even when recommendations are followed, some cracking is to be expected.
Care and maintenance are part of the experience
A Pitch Pine wooden floor requires more attention than other types of wood, but the reward is a floor with a very special depth and character.
To protect the wood, it is recommended that the floor is thoroughly saturated with oil care immediately after installation and before use.
Ongoing maintenance with oil and oil-based soaps helps preserve the wood's natural strength and reduce the risk of drying out.
During periods of low humidity, it may also be beneficial to add extra moisture to the indoor climate to support the wood's natural balance.
3-layer construction for optimal stability
All Wiking Gulve Pitch Pine plank floors are constructed with a 3-layer design, combining the aesthetics of natural materials with modern stability.
The transverse middle layer significantly reduces the wood's natural movement compared to traditional solid floors and makes the construction suitable for underfloor heating and modern homes. The wear layer is 4 mm as standard and allows for refreshing and sanding throughout the floor's lifetime.
The result is a floor that retains its exclusive appearance for many years.
